Cal woke up early and took a long, hot shower. After returning to his apartment the night before only to see it ransacked and with Uncle Judd nowhere to be found, Cal decided to return to the Travelodge, where he and Tony had booked a room the day before. Instead of hunkering down safely with Tony and Uncle Judd, Cal awoke alone, with both of his companions in whereabouts unknown.
Cal knew he needed to maintain his trust in Brittany. If anyone could help him find Tony and Uncle Judd, it was her. What a great thirtieth birthday present that would be.
The thought of another birthday was almost upsetting to Cal. What should be a celebration of life seemed meaningless without those he cared for around. He had no idea if their own lives may have been extinguished, much like a birthday candle being blown out.
His next move after the shower was to call Brittany. His heart pounded with anxiety as he thought of what to say. Would she be just as nervous as he was following their kiss? Would she dismiss it and forget it happened? Or would she want to kiss him again?
Brittany agreed to meet Cal for coffee and a light breakfast at the Starbucks on Taylor and Bishop. Brittany wasn’t overly hungry. She nibbled on a cake pop and slurped the occasional sip of a vanilla latte. Cal drank from a large cup of black coffee. He barely was able to eat half of his breakfast sandwich before his stomach felt upset. He wasn’t sure if something was wrong with the food or if he was that upset that Uncle Judd and Tony were out of sight.
“Uncle Judd wasn’t at your place when you went home last night?”
Cal shook his head. “I’ve tried calling him last night and this morning and haven’t heard anything. It’s not like him to not answer.”
Brittany finished her cake pop and tossed the stick onto the table. “Yeah, but you think he would’ve called by now, right?”
Cal nodded. He didn’t want to give any more evidence to support Brittany’s theories, but he had to share his thoughts with her. If he confirmed a few things she’d discovered, knowing that she could eventually confirm them herself, it wouldn’t bother him in the slightest if it meant Uncle Judd was safely returned.
“I think maybe Alfredo had something to do with it. Probably knew I’d go back to my place at some point. Only instead of grabbing me, they got Uncle Judd.”
Brittany smiled, seemingly impressed with the revelation. “Admitting you know the guy now, huh? I didn’t hear the call directly, but I have a feeling Alfredo was the one that called to tip us off to the possibility of Tina Fregosi being at Fulton Market. His men didn’t get you yesterday, so he’s gotta find a way to get to you somehow. Maybe taking Uncle Judd was it.”
Cal sipped at his coffee, which was still piping hot. His tongue felt more raw than a child’s rear after a parent’s spanking.
